The broth wasn’t piping hot and the flavor was a bit light. There was a lot of black garlic oil and green onions, which made it hard to fully enjoy the original tonkotsu flavor. The chashu was simply seasoned pork belly, which was a little disappointing. The bamboo shoots also didn’t have much flavor.

Tonkotsu Pork Ramen

Kawa Revolving Sushi in Beavercreek, Ohio serves Tonkotsu Pork Ramen — balanced pork broth, tender chashu and egg, and an affordable bowl worth trying.

The broth and noodles were decent overall. The broth was a little lukewarm, but the flavor was balanced — not too strong and not too light. Both the chashu and the egg were tender and tasty.

The portion size was a bit small, but the price was affordable, which was the best part. In addition to ramen, they also offer many unique sushi options, which made the menu even more interesting.

Katsu Curry Ramen

MI Ramen in Bellbrook, Ohio serves the Katsu Curry Ramen — a thick Japanese curry broth with crispy tonkatsu and enjoyable noodles. Unique and flavorful.

The broth felt like it was made with real Japanese curry. It was served very hot, thick, and rich, and the flavor was definitely good. However, the soup was so thick that it made the ramen a bit hard to eat. Personally, I wish the curry broth were more watery.

The noodles here were not gummy at all and were actually very enjoyable. Dipping the tonkatsu into the curry broth was especially delicious and worked really well.

Overall, this bowl was unique and tasty, but also a bit hard to eat because of how thick the broth was.

Original Tonkotsu Ramen

Genki Ramen in West Chester, Ohio serves Tonkotsu Ramen — creamy tonkotsu broth, soft noodles, chashu, bamboo shoots, soft-boiled egg, corn, and red ginger.

The interior was clean with counter seats facing the kitchen and booth seating for groups. The booth walls were decorated with lots of anime artwork, which gave the place a fun vibe.

The most memorable part of the bowl was the soup. It was too creamy with a thick texture. However, there wasn't much the pork oil, and flavor was weak for a tonkotsu broth. The noodles reminded me of cafeteria-style ramen in Japan, with a slightly gummy texture that I didn’t really enjoy. I also feel that red pickled ginger and corn don’t go well with tonkotsu ramen. The bamboo shoots didn’t have much seasoning either.

Wagyu Ramen

Megumi Sushi Ramen Grill in Hamilton, Ohio serves Wagyu Ramen — miso beef broth, soft noodles, tender wagyu, soft-boiled egg, and scallions.

The ramen here is overall a bit expensive, but I liked that you could choose between a small and large size. The wagyu beef was very tender and tasty. I wish it were served a little more rare. I don't think miso and beef broth are used together in Japan, so I had never tried this kind of soup before. It was good and served hot enough. The noodles were a little too soft for me, but they were still good. The soft-boiled egg was well-seasoned and delicious. There was seaweed in the bowl, but I'm not a fan of it in ramen.

Turkey Shio

Cafe Mochiko in Cincinnati, Ohio serves the Turkey Shio Ramen — turkey and chicken paitan broth, flat noodles, turkey chashu, farm-fresh daikon, and komatsuna.

I had to wait about an hour to get seated, and since they don’t take reservations, it’s better to come with plenty of time. The interior had lots of artwork and looked beautiful.

The noodles were flat and seemed to be homemade, which I really liked. The broth wasn’t overly salty and had a nice turkey aroma that made it smell delicious even before eating. The farm-fresh daikon and komatsuna were both flavorful, and the turkey chashu was tender and incredibly good.

The soft-boiled egg was one of my favorite toppings and it was very soft with a light seasoning. The presentation was also beautiful, and both the appearance and taste were so good. I think this is the best ramen in Cincinnati. I will definitely come back and try other ramen.

DFFC Miso Ramen

Slurping Turtle in Columbus, Ohio serves the DFFC Miso Ramen — rich miso broth with duck fat fried chicken, kimchi, buttered corn, and bold toppings.

I’ve been here several times, and personally, I think this is one of the best ramen shops in Ohio.

The Duck Fat Fried Chicken was absolutely delicious, and the thin noodles were great and matched well with the broth. The noodles were slightly stuck together, so I wish they had separated them before serving. The soup had kimchi in it, which added a bit of spice, and the rich miso flavor was really good. The other toppings were tasty as well.

Since I went on a Sunday afternoon, it was crowded and the food took some time to come out, but this ramen shop is worth the wait.

Ramen Flight

Speakeasy Ramen in Springfield, Ohio serves a Ramen Flight — Tonkotsu, Szechuan, and Thai curry ramen. Great flavors, bar-like vibe, but portions felt small.

I came here before and tried the Thai curry ramen, which was tasty. This time, I ordered the trio of small ramen bowls to compare the flavors. The interior had lots of artwork on the walls, and the upbeat music made it feel more like a bar.

The tonkotsu ramen was overly salty, and I could still feel the salt crystals in the broth. The Szechuan ramen was not too spicy and was actually pretty good. The Thai curry ramen was also tasty, and it's slightly spicy with a nice coconut milk flavor that balanced well.

Overall, the flavors themselves were good, but there were almost no toppings, and both the noodles and broth portions were very small for this price. The most disappointing part was that the fork still had pieces of scallions stuck to it, which made me feel the cleanliness wasn’t well managed. Even if the ramen tastes good, it’s hard to enjoy it when the utensils aren’t clean.

Creamy Chicken

Bushido Ramen in Dayton, Ohio serves the Creamy Chicken Ramen — topped with grilled chicken, egg, and veggies. The mini karaage bowl was the real standout.

The noodles tasted cheap and had a gummy texture, like the ones often used in cafeteria-style ramen in Japan, so I didn’t really like them. Although the menu described the broth as creamy, I didn’t find it creamy at all, and the chicken flavor was quite weak. The large grilled chicken slices were tender, and the seasoned egg was flavorful and tasty. However, I felt that there were too many toppings, which took away from the flavor of the soup. Overall, it looked nice but felt a bit unbalanced.

I also ordered the Mini Karaage Bowl, which was surprisingly delicious. The crispy fried chicken was topped with a special sauce and mayonnaise that mixed perfectly with the rice, making it incredibly flavorful.Personally, I’d recommend this more than the ramen itself.

Matcha Ramen

MI Ramen in Bellbrook, Ohio serves the Matcha Ramen — a unique matcha–flavored broth with chashu, soft-boiled egg, and balanced, surprisingly delicious taste.

I saw this matcha ramen last week and was curious, so I decided to try it this time. It’s definitely one of the most unique bowls of ramen I’ve had, but it turned out to be more delicious than I expected.

The broth had a matcha flavor, but it wasn’t overpowering, just the good balance. The chashu and egg were the same as before, both good seasoned and tasty.

If you have the chance, I definitely recommend trying their ramen this month while it's still on sale!

Butter Shoyu Ramen

MI Ramen in Bellbrook, Ohio serves the Butter Shoyu Ramen — chicken-based soy sauce broth with a block of butter, savory chashu, and mild, balanced flavor.

It was good chicken shoyu ramen. The block of butter placed on top was quite memorable. The soup was a chicken-based shoyu broth, but the soy sauce flavor wasn’t too strong. As expected, the soup wasn’t piping hot. The chashu had a nice, savory flavor and was really tasty.

This ramen usually costs $14.89, but this month it’s on sale for $13.00 including a drink, which makes the price and taste pretty good overall. I’d like to come back again to try their other ramen options.

Myojo Ramen

Myojo Ramen at Round1 in Beavercreek, Ohio serves Shio Tonkotsu ramen — light pork broth with a hint of saltiness, bamboo shoots, and chashu pork.

The ramen looked cheap at first, but the taste was actually decent. It had a solid tonkotsu flavor with a hint of saltiness. Unfortunately, it seemed like it was defrosted from frozen, so the overall temperature was lukewarm and some noodles were stuck together. It’s a casual and convenient option if you get a bit hungry after playing at Round1.

Bushido Black

Bushido Ramen in Dayton, Ohio serves the Bushido Black — tonkotsu ramen with black garlic oil, seasoned tofu, and a fun anime-themed interior.

The first thing I thought was that there were just too many toppings on the ramen, but the taste was not bad.

The broth had a tonkotsu flavor but was a bit thin and not served piping hot. The noodles had a chewy texture. I felt that corn didn’t really go well with it. The seasoned egg was flavorful, and the seasoned fried tofu I ordered instead of pork chashu was also well-seasoned and tasty.

The bowl was $14, which seemed like a typical price for ramen in the U.S. The interior was filled with Anime figures and snacks for sale, which gave the place a fun and unique vibe. They offered drinks like Calpico and boba tea, but there was no sake or other Japanese alcoholic beverages.

Tokusei Shoyu Soba

Umisoba in Oiso, Kanagawa serves the Tokusei Shoyu Soba — soy sauce-based seafood broth with thin noodles, rare chashu, and a perfectly soft-boiled egg.

This ramen shop is in my hometown, and I honestly think it’s the best ramen shop in the world. The broth, noodles, chashu, and egg — everything is absolutely perfect. The soup has a soy sauce base with a rich seafood flavor, served with thin noodles. The chashu is rare and tender, and the egg is soft-boiled, well-seasoned, and incredibly soft.

The owner does everything by himself, so it can take a little time for your ramen to be served, but it’s always worth the wait. I usually get the Shio, but this time I tried the Shoyu, and it was so good.

Shio Ramen

Santouka in Cambridge, Massachusetts serves Shio Ramen — a tonkotsu-style shio broth with medium-thick noodles and toppings like chashu and umeboshi.

There were many ramen options on the menu, but I ordered their most popular shio ramen. One thing I really liked was that you can choose the size from S to L. I was also able to use a student discount, which gave me a free upsize for one dollar — a great deal.

They used tip-of-bamboo shoots (hosaki menma), which were very flavorful and delicious. I was a bit disappointed that there was no seasoned egg, but I found it interesting that the bowl was topped with umeboshi, a dried pickled plum. It added a unique touch.

The noodles weren’t thin, but they had a medium thickness that felt just right. The broth wasn’t salty at all, and the temperature was perfect. It had a clean shio flavor with a light tonkotsu taste, and honestly, there was nothing to complain about.

Since this shop is part of a Japanese chain with locations in many places, it felt reassuring to eat here, knowing the quality would be consistent.

Garlic Miso

REDWHITE BONELESS RAMEN in Boston, Massachusetts serves Garlic Miso — a rich, layered miso broth with thick noodles, offering a vegan and gluten-free ramen.

JINYA Tonkotsu Original 2010

JINYA in Fishers, Indiana serves the JINYA Tonkotsu Original 2010 — rich tonkotsu broth with bold soy sauce and garlic, chashu, egg, and satisfying noodles.

As soon as I walked in, the staff greeted me with an "Irasshai!," which is a traditional Japanese welcome. It made the place feel very Japanese restaurant.

The broth had a strong, bold flavor with rich soy sauce and garlic, which was exactly my kind of taste. The medium-thick noodles paired really well with the broth and were satisfying to eat. Both the chashu and the egg were tender, well-seasoned, and very tasty.

I also signed up for their app and got a free nikuman, which was a nice bonus and a pleasant surprise. There are various branches, so I want to go there and try other ramen.

Cincinnati-style Ramen

Cafe Mochiko in Cincinnati, Ohio serves the Cincinnati-style Ramen— Cincinnati chili broth with ground pork, shredded cheddar, white onion, and tamago.

The ramen used a Cincinnati chili broth, which is something I had never seen before in ramen. It was simple but tasted very good. The presentation reminded me a lot of Skyline Chili — exactly what you would expect from a Cincinnati-style ramen. They offer only two types of ramen: American-style and Japanese-style. My friend ordered the Japanese-style ramen, and it looked delicious and much closer to traditional ramen. I’ll definitely come back and try that one next time.

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen

Ramen RAIJIN in Toronto, Canada serves the Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen — rich pork broth with authentic Japanese flavor, chashu, egg, and sesame toppings.

This ramen shop is located in Toronto, Canada. Everything from the taste and atmosphere to the staff was excellent. The rich pork broth had an authentic Japanese flavor and was absolutely delicious. It really made me feel like I was back in Hakata, Japan. I also ordered a Calpis Sour, an alcoholic drink made with Calpico and shochu, which I hadn’t had in a long time, and it was really good. The price was perfect — affordable and tasty. I added kimchi, which made the broth a bit spicier. First, I tried the non-spicy broth and noticed that the pork bone flavor was stronger than the miso. After that, I tasted the broth with spicy kimchi. It was a little spicy for me, but not too much. You can also customize your ramen by adjusting the toppings based on your mood or budget.
